Week 5 November–December: Learning from the Minor Prophets About Jesus, Promises, and Joy
Week 5 November–December: Learning from the Minor Prophets About Jesus, Promises, and Joy
Micah 5:2
Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem.
Your children may not know that it was Micah’s prophecy that helped the Wise Men find the baby Jesus. Using Micah 5:2 and Matthew 2:1–6, your children could reenact the Wise Men’s journey. Discuss why Jesus’s birth was so important that prophets knew about it many years before He was born.
Activities:
-
Reenact the Wise Men following the star to Bethlehem.
-
Talk about how prophecies help us know God’s plan.
Visual:
-
Three Wise Men gazing at the new star (The Holy Child Is Born, by Dana Wood)
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of Wise Men, gifts, or stars in illustrations.
-
Ask: If each Wise Man brought 3 gifts, how many gifts were brought in total?
Nahum 1:7
“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble.”
After reading Nahum 1:7, children could build or draw a simple “stronghold” or fortress. Discuss: What makes our day a “day of trouble”? How is Jesus Christ like a stronghold for us?
Activities:
-
Build a paper or block fortress.
-
Talk about personal challenges and how the Lord protects and strengthens us.
Math Connection:
-
Count how many walls, towers, or doors are in the fortress drawing.
-
Ask: If we add 2 more towers, how many towers are there in total?
Habakkuk 2:3
God will always fulfill His promises.
Use examples that take time, like fruit that ripens or dough that bakes. Discuss: What happens if we try to eat the fruit or dough too early? Read Habakkuk 2:3 and talk about promises God has kept. Say together: “Wait for it; because it will surely come.”
Activities:
-
Draw or list things that take time to grow or be ready.
-
Identify promises from God in scripture or personal life.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of promises or examples listed.
-
Ask: If we add 3 new promises from our family this week, how many total promises are there?
Habakkuk 2:14
I can help fill the earth with knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Fill a jar or container with pictures or words representing Jesus’s teachings and actions. Discuss how we can share knowledge of the Lord. Use a map to show your location and places missionaries serve. Sing “We’ll Bring the World His Truth” (Children’s Songbook, 172–73).
Activities:
-
Place pictures or words in a jar for each teaching of Jesus.
-
Locate places on a map where missionaries serve.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of pictures or words placed in the jar.
-
Ask: If we add 5 more teachings this week, how many total teachings are represented?
Zephaniah 3:14–20
Jesus Christ rejoices with those who follow Him.
Children could identify things that make them want to “sing, … be glad and rejoice with all the heart.” Sing joyful hymns or songs together and discuss the joy of the gospel.
Activities:
-
Make a “Joy List” of things that bring happiness through following Jesus.
-
Sing and dance to a favorite Primary song about joy or gratitude.
Math Connection:
-
Count the items on your Joy List.
-
Ask: If each child adds 2 more joyful actions, how many items are on the list in total?

Why was Jesus Christ’s birth important to the world?

How does the Lord protect and bless us in times of trouble?
