Week 4 June: Walking in the Lord’s Ways

Week 4 June: Walking in the Lord’s Ways

2 Samuel 11; 1 Kings 8, 11

Even great leaders like David and Solomon faced difficult choices. David made serious mistakes when tempted, but he could turn to the Lord for help (2 Samuel 11). Solomon’s story reminds us that putting other things above God can lead us away from Him (1 Kings 11:1–11).

These stories help children understand the importance of resisting temptation, keeping covenants, and putting the Lord first in all they do.

Teaching Ideas for Families

1. Resisting Temptation
Read 2 Samuel 11 together. Ask your children to identify the wrong choices David made and suggest good choices he could have made instead. Discuss ways the Lord can help us when we are tempted.

Activity idea: Create a “Right Choice / Wrong Choice” sorting game. Write different scenarios on cards and have children place them under the right or wrong column.

Optional discussion: Reading about David’s mistakes can also be a gentle way to discuss the dangers of pornography. The video “What Should I Do When I See Pornography?” (Gospel Library) provides guidance. Encourage children to make a personal plan for what to do when they encounter temptation.

2. Keeping Covenants
Read 1 Kings 8:22–61 about Solomon dedicating the temple. Talk about what it means to “walk in all [the Lord’s] ways” (1 Kings 8:58).

Activity idea: Show pictures of temples and ask children to notice details. For each detail they identify, they can take a step forward, symbolizing walking in the Lord’s ways.

Sing together: “I Love to See the Temple” (Children’s Songbook, 95). Discuss how keeping covenants helps guide our choices and strengthens our relationship with the Lord.

3. Putting God First
Read 1 Kings 11:1–11 about Solomon and his wives. Discuss examples of “other gods” or distractions that can take our focus from God. Talk about ways we can put the Lord first in our hearts and lives.

Activity idea: Make a “Heart Priority Chart.” Draw a large heart and have children add pictures or words representing things they love. Place God in the center and discuss how everything else fits around Him.

Preschool Add-On

Letter of the Week: W for Ways
Number: 3 (Resist temptation, keep covenants, put God first)
Shape: Heart (representing God in the center of our lives)
Color: Blue (symbolizing faith and guidance)

Sight Words: I, can, walk, God

Tracing Sentences:
I can walk with God.
God helps me make right choices.

Math Connection:
Count 3 steps for each principle:

  1. Resist temptation

  2. Keep covenants

  3. Put God first
    Practice simple addition: 1 + 2 = 3; subtraction: 3 − 1 = 2.

Reading Connection:
Read a short story about choosing what is right. Ask, “What would David do?” or “How can I put God first?” Encourage children to point to sight words they recognize.

Craft Idea:
Make a “Heart Priority Wheel.” Draw a heart divided into three sections: Right Choices, Covenants, God First. Children can spin a paper arrow and share examples for each section.

Early Elementary Add-On

Reading & Writing Extension:
Write a short journal entry: “How I Can Walk in God’s Ways.” Encourage children to describe one way they can resist temptation, keep a covenant, or put God first.

Math Connection:
Create a “Covenant Step Chart.” Draw 10 steps leading to a temple or heart. Each step represents a righteous choice. Practice addition and subtraction:

  • 10 steps − 4 wrong choices = 6 steps forward

  • 3 good choices + 2 more = 5 steps forward

Art or Reflection Project:
Make a “Heart Priority Poster.” Draw a large heart and add pictures or words for the most important things in life. Place God in the center. Decorate around the heart with examples of righteous choices and blessings.

Family Thought:
Even great leaders like David and Solomon needed God’s help to make the right choices. We can turn to Him when tempted, keep covenants to guide our steps, and put Him first in our hearts. Doing so brings blessings, protection, and peace.
