Week 5 August - September: God Comforts, Guides, and Knows Me
Psalm 102:1–2
The Lord comforts me and gives me hope.
Read Psalm 102:1–2 together, looking for how the Lord helps us during difficulties. Ask your children: How can we find His help? Share experiences when you needed help and felt that God heard your prayers.
Activity: Create a “Comfort Box.” Have children draw or write ways God comforts them on slips of paper and place them in a box. Each day, pick one and discuss how the Lord helps in that situation.
Math Connection: Count the slips in the box each day. Ask questions such as:

If we add 2 more comfort notes, how many are in the box?

If we give one to a friend, how many remain?
Psalm 119:105
God’s word is like a light.
Talk about what it feels like to be in the dark. What things are harder to do in the dark? Invite your children to try a simple activity with eyes closed, like drawing a picture, to show how we need guidance.
Read Psalm 119:105. What does this verse teach about light and God’s word? Look for ways Heavenly Father helps us stay on His path in Psalms 119:47–48; 119:105; 1 Nephi 11:25; 2 Nephi 31:20.
Activity:

Show pictures of objects that give light (lamp, flashlight, sun) and have your children place them in order as you read the verse.

Sing a song about light, such as “Teach Me to Walk in the Light” (Children’s Songbook, 177) or “I Will Walk with Jesus” (Gospel Library).
Math Connection:

Count the number of light sources in the pictures.

Sort pictures by size or brightness to practice comparison.

Ask: If we have 5 lights and 2 go out, how many remain shining?
Psalm 139:1–3, 23–24
Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know me and love me.
Make short lists of things you know about each child. Read the lists and have children guess who is being described. Then read Psalm 139:1–3 together, and list things Heavenly Father and Jesus know about each of us.
Write Psalm 139:23–24 on a board or paper. Have children underline words that describe what God can do for us. Discuss why we want God to do these things.
Activity:

“All About Me” worksheet: Children draw or write things Heavenly Father knows about them.

Share with family members how each child is uniquely known and loved by God.
Math Connection:

Count the number of characteristics listed for each child.

Compare which child listed more, fewer, or the same number of traits.
Psalm 146:1, 5–9
I can praise the Lord.
Discuss times children were praised or told they did a good job. Share things from Psalm 146:6–9 that the Lord has done (explain unfamiliar words). Invite children to talk about other things God does for them.
Activity:

Make a “Praise Tree.” Each child writes or draws a blessing on a leaf. Attach leaves to a paper tree and talk about each blessing.

Sing a song of praise, such as “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” (Hymns, no. 35).
Math Connection:

Count the leaves on the Praise Tree.

Add new leaves as more blessings are recognized.

Practice subtraction: If 3 leaves fall off, how many are left?
Family Thought:
President Russell M. Nelson teaches that the home should be the “center of gospel learning” (“Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2018, 13). Discuss ways to deepen personal or family study of Psalms this week. After studying, share what you learned and felt with family, friends, or at church.
