Week 4 September–October: Preparing, Witnessing, and Growing in the Lord

Isaiah 40:3–5

I can help prepare “the way of the Lord.”
Help your children understand “prepare the way of the Lord” by doing simple, concrete activities: straighten crooked objects, clear a cluttered floor, or make a clear path in a garden or rocky area. Show pictures of John the Baptist and Joseph Smith (Gospel Art Book, nos. 35, 87). Discuss how they helped prepare the way for the Lord’s coming (Luke 3:2–18; Doctrine and Covenants 135:3).

Activity:

  • Children can each pick a small area of a room or a hallway to “prepare the way” for someone else.

  • Discuss ways we can prepare the way spiritually for others.

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of objects straightened or cleaned.

  • Ask: If I straighten 3 items and you straighten 4 items, how many objects did we prepare in total?

Isaiah 43:10

I can be a witness of the Lord.
After reading Isaiah 43:10, discuss what it means to be a witness. Share personal experiences—food tasted, places visited, people known—and connect this to witnessing about the Lord.

Activity:

  • Make a “Witness Wall” on paper: children draw or write things they know about the Lord that they can share.

Math Connection:

  • Count how many items each child added to the Witness Wall.

  • Compare: Which child added the most? The least?

Isaiah 44:3–4; 45:8

The Lord will “pour” His blessings on me.
Water a plant with your children and talk about how blessings help us grow, just like water helps a plant. Discuss specific blessings they have received and how they help them grow spiritually.

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of times the children pour water on the plant.

  • Measure how much water the plant receives in cups or tablespoons.

  • Discuss: If each cup represents a blessing, how many blessings did the plant get today?

Isaiah 48:17–18

Keeping God’s commandments brings peace.
Show pictures or videos of rivers and waves. Have children move their hands and arms like a flowing river or rolling waves. Discuss how peace and righteousness are like rivers and waves. Sing “Keep the Commandments” (Children’s Songbook, 146–47).

Math Connection:

  • Count each wave or movement children make.

  • Ask: If we do 10 waves each and there are 3 children, how many waves in total?

Isaiah 49:14–16

The Lord will never forget me.
Discuss times when people might feel forgotten. Show how the Lord always remembers us. Ask children to think of someone they will never forget, then read Isaiah 49:15–16 and connect it to the Lord’s love. Share feelings about Jesus Christ and His care for us.

Math Connection:

  • Draw hands or fingerprints for each person the children never want to forget.

  • Count the total number of people remembered.

  • Optional: Compare with verses about the Lord remembering us—how many times does He say He will remember?

Family Thought & Reflection:

  • How can we help prepare the way of the Lord for ourselves and others?

  • How can we be witnesses of Jesus Christ in our daily lives?

  • How have the Lord’s blessings helped us grow?

Preschool Add-On:

  • Letter of the Week: P for Prepare / Pour / Peace

  • Number: 3 (preparing, witnessing, pouring)

  • Shape: Wave shape / ripple

  • Color: Blue (peace, water)

  • Sight Words: I, can, help, Lord

Tracing Sentences:

  • I can prepare the way of the Lord.

  • The Lord pours blessings on me.

Craft Idea:

  • Make a “Blessings Watering Can”: children decorate a paper watering can and write blessings they have received on the drops.

Early Elementary Add-On:

  • Reading & Writing Extension: Write a short paragraph: “How I Can Prepare the Way of the Lord.”

  • Math Extension: Make a chart of blessings poured out during the week and tally how many times each blessing is recognized or shared.
