Week 4 October–November: Learning from Jeremiah and Lamentations About God’s Love, Covenants, and Courage
Week 4 October–November: Learning from Jeremiah and Lamentations About God’s Love, Covenants, and Courage
Jeremiah 31:3
Heavenly Father and Jesus love me “with an everlasting love.”
Read Jeremiah 31:3 together and talk about what “everlasting” means. Children could help find objects (or pictures of objects) that last a long time, like a metal coin, and objects that do not, like a piece of fruit.
Activities:
-
Share experiences of feeling Heavenly Father’s everlasting love.
-
Sing “God Is Watching Over All” (Children’s Songbook, 229).
-
Draw or write ways we can feel God’s love every day.
Discussion:
-
How does knowing God’s love is everlasting help us make choices?
-
How can we share His love with others?
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of “everlasting” objects found in the room or pictures.
-
Ask: If we find 3 lasting objects and 4 temporary ones, how many objects did we identify in total?
Jeremiah 31:31–34; 32:38–41
God will help me keep my covenants.
Children can draw a heart on paper and write inside the heart what they learn from these verses about making covenants with God. Review the covenant of baptism (Mosiah 18:10, 13) and discuss what it means for promises to be written in our hearts.
Activities:
-
Talk about what it means to “remember” and “keep” covenants.
-
Draw or write one covenant action children can do this week.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of covenant actions written in hearts.
-
Ask: If each child writes 2 actions and there are 5 children, how many actions are recorded?
Jeremiah 36:1–4
The scriptures are the word of God.
Learn about Jeremiah, Baruch, and the king (Jeremiah 36). Children could act out writing in a book (verse 4) and reading scriptures to the people (verses 8, 10).
Activities:
-
Compare a children’s book with the scriptures and discuss what makes the scriptures special.
-
Share scripture passages that are meaningful to each family member.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of actions in the story (writing, reading, delivering messages).
-
Ask: If each action is done twice, how many actions are there in total?
Jeremiah 38:6–13
I can stand up for what is right.
Show the picture of Ebed-melech rescuing Jeremiah from the dungeon. Discuss how he bravely helped the Lord’s prophet.
Activities:
-
Find a verse where Ebed-melech did something courageous (Jeremiah 38:6–13).
-
Talk about ways we can show we know the prophet today is called of God.
-
Role-play standing up for what is right in small situations.
Math Connection:
-
Count the brave actions Ebed-melech took in the story.
-
Ask: If we act bravely 3 times each day for 2 days, how many brave actions are there?
Lamentations 1:1–2, 16; 3:22–26
The Savior made it possible for me to be forgiven of my sins.
Explain that because the Israelites had not repented, Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed. Read the verses and discuss how people might have felt at that time (Lamentations 1:1–2, 16). Then read Lamentations 3:22–26 and talk about how it gives hope through Jesus Christ’s forgiveness.
Activities:
-
Share times when you felt sad about a bad choice.
-
Find words in Lamentations 3:22–26 that show God’s mercy and forgiveness.
-
Draw or write about a choice you want to make better this week.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of comforting words in Lamentations 3:22–26.
-
Ask: If there are 5 words that bring hope, and we add 2 more from our own experiences, how many words are there in total?
Family Thought & Reflection:
-
How can we feel God’s everlasting love every day?
-
What covenants can we make and keep to come closer to Him?
-
How can we stand up for what is right and trust the Savior to forgive us?
