Week 4 May: The Lord Raised Up a Deliverer

Week 4 May

Judges 2–4; 6–8; 13–16

“The Lord Raised Up a Deliverer”

Scripture Focus

The book of Judges shows us a repeated pattern: the Israelites would sin, turn away from God, and then face hardship. But the Lord always offered a way back. He raised up deliverers—military leaders and prophets—to guide His people and restore them to righteousness. Even when we make mistakes or face temptations, Jesus Christ is our Redeemer, and He is always ready to help us return to Him.

For an overview of the book of Judges, see “Judges, book of” in the Bible Dictionary.

Lesson 1: The Lord Forgives When I Repent — Judges 2:1–19; 3:5–12

Read these passages and discuss how the Israelites repeatedly turned from God, and how He forgave them when they repented.

Activity:
Make a “Steps to Repentance” paper chain. Cut strips of paper, and on each strip, write one step to return to God: regret, confess, pray, forgive, change, serve, rejoice. Link the strips together to make a chain. As your child completes each step in real life, remove that link and see the chain get shorter—showing how repentance brings us closer to the Lord.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “The Lord forgives me when I repent.”
Sight words: Lord, forgives, me, when, I

Math Connection:
Count how many links are in the paper chain. Add one more step your child thinks could help them stay close to God.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a paragraph describing a time when you realized you had made a mistake and how repentance helped you feel peace.

Lesson 2: Faith Inspires Others — Judges 4:1–15

Deborah’s faith encouraged Barak and the Israelites to act courageously. Read Judges 4:1–15 together and identify examples of her leadership and faith.

Activity:
Draw or make a “Faith Ladder.” On each rung, write a way that your child can inspire others through faith and good choices.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “My faith can help others.”
Sight words: my, faith, can, help, others

Math Connection:
Draw five steps of the ladder and number them 1–5. Each time a child does a faithful action, mark it on the ladder.

Elementary Add-On:
Write one short story about how someone’s faith influenced you. Then write a goal for how you can help others through your faith this week.

Lesson 3: The Lord Can Work Miracles — Judges 6–8

Gideon’s story shows that God can accomplish great things, even with small resources, when we trust Him. Read Judges 6–8 together.

Activity:
Create a “Gideon’s Army” activity with small toys, blocks, or paper figures. Reduce the “army” to show how God chose a small group to do His work. Discuss how God can use small things to accomplish big miracles.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “God can do great things with small things.”
Sight words: God, can, do, great, things

Math Connection:
Start with twelve figures. Remove ten to represent the small army. Count the remaining figures. Discuss why a smaller number might be more helpful in this story.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a paragraph explaining a time God helped you or someone you know do something that seemed impossible.

Lesson 4: Keeping Covenants Gives Strength — Judges 13–16

Samson’s strength came from obeying God’s covenant. When he broke the covenant, he lost his strength. Read Judges 13–16 and discuss how our covenants strengthen us spiritually.

Activity:
Do simple exercises (push-ups, jumping jacks, stretches) and discuss how strengthening the body is like strengthening our spirit through keeping covenants.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “Keeping covenants makes me strong.”
Sight words: keeping, covenants, makes, me, strong

Math Connection:
Count repetitions of each exercise and keep a tally. Compare totals at the beginning and end of the week.

Elementary Add-On:
Write three covenants you have made with God. Explain how each one helps you feel strong spiritually.

Lesson 5: Jesus Christ Is My Deliverer — Judges 3:7–15

The Israelites cried out to the Lord, and He raised up deliverers. Read Judges 3:7–15. Emphasize that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Deliverer who rescues us from sin.

Activity:
Gather pictures of people and a picture of Jesus. Play a matching game where children find the picture of Jesus, then sing “He Sent His Son” (Children’s Songbook, 34–35).

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “Jesus Christ delivers me.”
Sight words: Jesus, Christ, delivers, me

Math Connection:
Count the pictures used in the matching game. Ask your child to make groups of 2–3 and count how many groups they made.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a short paragraph describing a time you felt delivered or helped by Jesus Christ.

Family Discussion

  • How can we trust God when we feel afraid or unsure?

  • How does our faith encourage others?

  • How can small efforts accomplish big blessings?

  • What covenants help us stay strong spiritually?

End your week by singing “He Sent His Son” or “I Am a Child of God”, and say a prayer together, thanking God for deliverers, for Jesus Christ, and for opportunities to act with faith and courage.
