Week 4 March: “God Meant It Unto Good”

Week 4 March: “God Meant It Unto Good”

Scriptures: Genesis 42–50

God Can Bring Good from Hard Things

Joseph’s brothers had hurt him long ago, yet Joseph chose to forgive them. Even though he had suffered many trials, he helped his family survive famine.

Questions to Discuss:

  • Why might it have been hard for Joseph to forgive his brothers?

  • How did Joseph show love and forgiveness?

  • Who in your life might need your forgiveness?

Activity Idea – “Forgiveness Role-Play”:

  • Children act out simple scenarios where someone makes a mistake. Practice saying:

    • “I forgive you.”

    • “It’s okay, let’s be friends.”

  • Talk about how forgiveness makes hearts feel lighter and happier.

Song Idea:

  • “Love One Another” (Children’s Songbook, 136) or “Help Me, Dear Father” (Children’s Songbook, 99).

Joseph and the Savior

Joseph saved his family from famine, showing kindness and foresight. In similar ways, Jesus Christ saves all of us from sin and helps us in our trials.

Activity Idea – “Joseph and Jesus Comparison”:

  • Make a two-column chart:
Column 1: Joseph – helped his family, forgave, saved from famine.
Column 2: Jesus – forgives our sins, saves us spiritually, loves everyone.

  • Discuss ways Joseph’s story points to Jesus Christ.

Questions to Discuss:

  • What does it mean to save or rescue someone?

  • How did Joseph rescue his brothers? How does Jesus rescue us?

Healing Comes Through Forgiveness

Forgiving others can be hard, but it brings peace and healing. Joseph shows that God can turn bad situations into good ones.

Activity Idea – “Draw the Good from Bad”:

  • Children draw something sad that happened to Joseph (or themselves) on one side of the paper.

  • On the other side, draw how God made something good come from it.

Scripture Exploration:

  • Read Genesis 50:20 together: “God meant it unto good.”

  • Talk about ways God helps us see good in hard situations.

The Lord Helps Through Priesthood Blessings

Jacob blessed his family, showing that God can help us through priesthood blessings and inspired counsel.

Activity Idea – “Family Blessing Discussion”:

  • Show a picture of Jacob blessing Joseph’s sons.

  • Share stories of blessings received or ask children how they feel when they are prayed for or helped by God.

Children’s Wrap-Up Questions:

  • How can I show love and forgiveness to my family?

  • How do I see Jesus in Joseph’s story?

  • How can I trust God to turn hard things into something good?

Optional Crafts:

  • Make “Forgiveness Hearts”: children decorate hearts and write “I forgive” on them to remind them to show kindness and forgiveness each day.
