Week 4 Jun - July: If the Lord Be God, Follow Him

June Week 4 / July Week 1: “If the Lord Be God, Follow Him”

1 Kings 12–13; 17–22

The Israelites were divided into two kingdoms—Israel and Judah—and both had turned away from the Lord. But even in dark times, the Lord called Elijah to be His prophet. Elijah’s story shows that great faith can bring miracles, whether through fire from heaven, food for a hungry family, or the quiet whisper of the Holy Ghost.

Teaching Ideas for Families

1. Christlike Leaders Serve with Love
Read 1 Kings 12:1–20. Discuss King Rehoboam’s mistake in choosing harshness instead of kindness. Ask: What could he have done differently? What does a Christlike leader do?
(See also Matthew 20:25–28; Mosiah 2:10–21.)

Activity idea: Make a “Leader’s Heart” poster. Write words that describe Christlike leadership—kindness, patience, humility—and add drawings of how we can lead with love at home and school.

2. Faith and Sacrifice Bring Blessings
Read 1 Kings 17:8–16; 19:19–21. Talk about Elijah and the widow who chose to give her last meal in faith, and about Elisha leaving his home to follow God.

Ask: Why does the Lord sometimes ask us to give something up? What blessings come when we obey in faith?

Activity idea: Create a “Faith Jar.” Each time your family shows faith—sharing, praying, or serving—add a small token or paper heart. Watch your blessings grow throughout the week.

3. Choosing to Follow God
Read 1 Kings 18:17–39. The people of Israel had to choose whether to follow God or Baal. Ask: Why is it important to make our choice to follow God every day?

Activity idea: Draw two paths—one labeled “Follow God” and one labeled “Follow the World.” Discuss daily choices (like being honest, kind, and obedient) that keep us on God’s path.

Sing together: “Choose the Right” (Children’s Songbook, 160–61).

4. Hearing the Still Small Voice
Read 1 Kings 19:9–12. Act out the strong wind, earthquake, and fire—then sit quietly together and whisper, “after the fire a still small voice.” Talk about how the Spirit speaks in gentle, peaceful ways.

Ask: What helps you hear the Holy Ghost? What might make it harder to listen?

Activity idea: Have a “Quiet Listening” challenge—sit in silence for 30 seconds and then share what sounds you could hear. Explain that listening for the Holy Ghost takes quiet hearts.

Preschool Add-On

Letter of the Week: F for Follow
Number: 2 (two choices—follow God or the world)
Shape: Heart (choose to follow God with our hearts)
Color: Yellow (light and faith)

Sight Words: I, can, follow, God

Tracing Sentences:
I can follow God.
God helps me be good.
I can listen to the Spirit.

Math Connection:
Count and color 2 choices in pictures—one good, one bad. Discuss which one follows God.
Practice: 1 + 1 = 2 (two choices) and 2 − 1 = 1 (only one right choice).

Reading Connection:
Read a short story about making the right choice, then ask: “Which choice follows God?” Help children point to sight words as you read.

Craft Idea:
Make “Follow God Footsteps.” Trace your child’s feet on paper and write ways to follow God on each footprint. Tape them around the room as a reminder to walk in His ways.

Early Elementary Add-On

Reading & Writing Extension:
Write a journal entry: “How I Can Follow God.” Encourage children to write or draw a time they made a good choice or listened to the Spirit.

Sight Word Practice:
Create simple flashcards using this week’s words: I, can, follow, God.
Practice reading them in short phrases and sentences.

Math Connection:
Create a “Faith Choices Chart.”

  • Each good choice = +1 point

  • Each time you listen to the Spirit = +2 points
At the end of the week, add the total and talk about what you learned from making good choices.

Art or Reflection Project:
Draw “Fire from Heaven.” Use red, yellow, and orange crayons or paper to show Elijah’s faith and power from God. On the back, write: “If the Lord be God, follow Him.”

Family Thought:
Elijah’s story reminds us that true power comes from faith and obedience. Whether through miracles or a still, small voice, the Lord is always ready to guide those who choose to follow Him.
