Week 4 February: Following Righteous Desires & God’s Promises

Week 4 February: Following Righteous Desires & God’s Promises

Scriptures: Genesis 12–17; Abraham 1–2; Genesis 14–16

God Blesses Me for Faith and Righteous Desires

Abraham desired to follow God even though he came from a family that didn’t. His life shows that God honors those who want to do what is right.

Activity Idea – “Desire Tree”:

  • Draw a large tree on paper or poster board.

  • Have children write or draw one desire they have to do what is good on a “leaf” and attach it to the tree.

  • Talk about how God can help each desire grow, just like leaves on a tree.

Counting & Math Activity:

  • Count the promises God made to Abraham in Abraham 2:6–11.

  • Word Problem Examples:

    1. “Abraham had 3 flocks of sheep. Each flock has 4 sheep. How many sheep in total?”

    2. “Sarah waited 5 years for a baby. Then she waited 2 more years. How many years in all?”

    3. “Abraham and Sarah planted 6 trees. Each tree had 3 fruits. How many fruits altogether?”

Learning About Covenants

God made a covenant with Abraham and Sarah, promising blessings to them and their posterity. We can learn that God wants us to make and keep covenants too.

Activity Idea – “Covenant Promise Box”:

  • Give each child a small box.

  • Inside, write or draw promises God makes to us when we obey Him.

  • Let children decorate the box to remind them of God’s promises.

Tracing & Writing Practice (Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners):

  • “God keeps His promises.”

  • “I make promises to God.”

  • “I follow God’s hand.”

Role-Playing Activity – “Following by the Hand”:

  • Blindfold a child and lead them by the hand.

  • Discuss how it feels to be guided safely and how Jesus leads us by the hand in life.

Learning About God Hearing Me

Abraham and Hagar each experienced God hearing them in difficult situations. Children can relate to God’s care in their own lives.

Activity Idea – “Prayer Reminder Rocks”:

  • Have children decorate a small rock and write a short prayer on it.

  • Place it somewhere special as a reminder that God listens to us anytime.

Song Idea:

  • Sing “A Child’s Prayer” (Children’s Songbook, 12–13).

  • Encourage children to think of prayers they can say when they need help or feel alone.

Being a Peacemaker

Abraham and Lot separated peacefully, showing that we can choose to resolve conflicts kindly.

Role-Playing Activity – “Peaceful Solutions”:

  • Act out small disagreements (like sharing toys).

  • Have children find ways to make everyone happy, following Abraham’s example.

Easy, Creative At-Home Crafts Add-On

  1. Desire Tree Craft: Leaves showing children’s good desires.

  2. Covenant Promise Box: Decorate and fill with personal covenant reminders.

  3. Guided Hand Path: Draw a path on paper and lead a toy or child along it while discussing following Jesus.
