Week 3 October: Learning from Jeremiah About Heavenly Knowledge, Prophets, and Guidance
Week 3 October: Learning from Jeremiah About Heavenly Knowledge, Prophets, and Guidance
Jeremiah 1:5
Heavenly Father knew me before I was born.
Introduce the truth of Jeremiah 1:5 by showing a picture of a baby—or, if possible, pictures of your children as babies. Ask: Where did we live before we were born? How did Heavenly Father know us?
Activities:
-
Sing “I Lived in Heaven” (Children’s Songbook, 4).
-
Look up “Premortal Life” in the Guide to the Scriptures and answer questions like “Who was there?” “When were we there?” and “What did we do?”
Discussion:
-
How does it make you feel to know Heavenly Father knew you before birth?
-
How can this truth help you make good choices today?
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of children in the family or class and imagine Heavenly Father knowing each one before birth.
Jeremiah 1:4–19
Prophets are called to speak the words of the Lord.
Show pictures of living prophets or prophets from the scriptures (Church magazines, Gospel Art Book, or Come, Follow Me). Ask: What do you know about these prophets? What do prophets do?
Activities:
-
Select verses from Jeremiah 1 (verses 5, 7, 10, and 19).
-
Have each child pick a verse, read it, and share something they learned about prophets.
-
Draw or write a message you think a prophet would share with you today.
Discussion:
-
How can we listen to and follow prophets in our daily lives?
-
Why is it important to speak or share God’s words with others?
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of prophet actions discussed (speaking, teaching, guiding, warning).
-
Ask: If we add 2 more actions this week, how many total actions can prophets do?
Jeremiah 16:14–16
I can help Heavenly Father’s children come back to Him.
Read Jeremiah 16:16 and discuss the “fishers and hunters” metaphor. Children can pretend to “fish” or “hunt” for objects around the room to illustrate this idea.
Activities:
-
Watch A Message for Children from President Russell M. Nelson (3:30, ChurchofJesusChrist.org).
-
Discuss what missionaries do and how we can help them.
-
Draw a picture of “fishing” for people who need to learn about Jesus Christ.
Discussion:
-
How can you help bring others closer to Heavenly Father?
-
What small things can we do this week to share His love?
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of “fishers and hunters” you act out.
-
Ask: If each child “catches” 3 objects, and there are 4 children, how many objects are caught in total?
Jeremiah 18:1–6
I can let the Lord guide my life, like a potter shapes clay.
Discuss or show how pottery is made. Ask: What message does the Lord give in Jeremiah 18:1–6? What does it mean to be like clay in the Lord’s hands? Reference Isaiah 64:8 and Elder Richard J. Maynes, “The Joy of Living a Christ-Centered Life” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2015, 27–30).
Activities:
-
Show pictures of pottery being shaped or allow children to mold clay/playdough.
-
Talk about how the Lord can shape our actions and choices.
-
Draw or sculpt something to represent how Heavenly Father can guide you.
Discussion:
-
How can we trust Heavenly Father to shape our lives?
-
What happens if we resist His guidance?
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of changes or shapes children create with clay.
-
Ask: If each child makes 2 shapes and there are 5 children, how many shapes are there in total?
Family Thought & Reflection:
-
How does knowing Heavenly Father knew us before birth affect our choices today?

How can we follow prophets and Heavenly Father’s guidance this week?
