Week 3 November: Learning from Hosea and Joel About Covenants, Seeking the Lord, and the Holy Ghost

Hosea 2:19–20

I can faithfully keep my covenants.
In Hosea, the Lord compared His covenants with His people to a marriage. To help your children understand this comparison, show a picture of a bride and groom and discuss how a husband and wife should treat each other.

Activities:

  • Find words in Hosea 2:19–20 that describe how the Lord feels about His people.

  • Discuss ways to show the Lord we love Him and will be faithful to Him.

Math Connection:

  • Count the words in Hosea 2:19–20 that describe God’s love and promises.

  • Ask: If we add 3 more ways we can be faithful, how many total ways are there?

Hosea 10:12

“It is time to seek the Lord.”
Hosea 10:12 uses sowing, reaping, time, and rain as examples for seeking the Lord.

Activities:

  • Draw a clock and write down ways to seek the Lord at different times during the day.

  • Sing “Anytime, Anywhere” (Gospel Library) to emphasize that it is always a good time to seek the Lord.

  • Act out planting seeds, picking vegetables, or standing in the rain. Compare sowing seeds with living righteously and receiving blessings.

  • Share personal experiences of blessings received from seeking the Lord.

Math Connection:

  • Count how many ways your family can seek the Lord each day.

  • Ask: If each child adds 2 more ways, how many ways are there in total?

Hosea 13:4, 14

Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer.
Hosea 13:4 reminds us there is no Savior except Jesus Christ.

Activities:

  • Show pictures of several people, including Jesus, and have children identify who has the power to save us from sin and death.

  • Find words in Hosea 13:4, 14 that describe Jesus Christ and discuss what these words teach about Him.

  • Use the Guide to the Scriptures to locate other verses about Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer.

  • Share personal feelings and testimonies about Jesus Christ.

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of words describing Jesus in Hosea 13:4, 14.

  • Ask: If each child adds one more description, how many total descriptions are there?

Joel 2:28–29

The Holy Ghost can guide me.
Joel 2:28–29 talks about the Spirit being “poured out” on all people.

Activities:

  • Pour a liquid and compare it to a drip or trickle to help children visualize the Spirit being poured out.

  • As you read, substitute each child’s name for “your sons” and “your daughters.”

  • Look up John 14:16; Moroni 10:5; Doctrine and Covenants 42:17 to discuss how the Holy Ghost can help us.

Math Connection:

  • Count how many ways the Spirit can guide us, according to the scriptures read.

  • Ask: If each child names 2 ways the Spirit helps them, how many ways are there in total?

Family Thought & Reflection:

  • How can I be faithful to the Lord’s covenants?

  • What does it mean to “seek the Lord” every day?

  • How does Jesus Christ help me through His Atonement?

  • How can the Holy Ghost guide me in making choices?

Preschool Add-On:

  • Letter of the Week: S for Savior / Spirit / Seek

  • Number: 3 (covenants, blessings, ways Spirit guides)

  • Shape: Circle (wholeness, covenant)

  • Color: Blue (guidance, faith)

  • Sight Words: I, can, Lord, help

Tracing Sentences:

  • I can faithfully keep my covenants.

  • The Holy Ghost can guide me.

Craft Idea:

  • Make a “Guiding Light” craft: draw a lantern or light and write ways the Holy Ghost can help you.

Early Elementary Add-On:

  • Reading & Writing Extension: Write a short paragraph: “How I Can Seek the Lord This Week.”

  • Math Extension: Make a chart of daily actions to follow Jesus Christ and be guided by the Spirit.
