Week 3 May: Be Strong and of a Good Courage

Week 3 May

Joshua 1–8; 23–24

“Be Strong and of a Good Courage”

Scripture Focus

After Moses passed away, Joshua became the new leader of the Israelites. God told Joshua to be strong and courageous as he led the people into the promised land. With faith and obedience, the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, watched the walls of Jericho fall, and learned that when they followed God, miracles happened.

Lesson 1: God Will Be With Me — Joshua 1:1–9

Talk about how Joshua might have felt when he had to lead the people after Moses. Read Joshua 1:9 together: “The Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Discuss how we can be brave because God is always with us.

Activity:
Make a “Courage Shield.” Cut a large shield from paper. On it, draw or write things that make your family strong—such as prayer, kindness, courage, and faith.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “God is with me wherever I go.”
Sight words: God, is, with, me, go

Math Connection:
Draw five shields and count them together. Write the numbers 1–5 on each. Have your child line them up from smallest to largest.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a short paragraph describing a time when you felt nervous or afraid, and how faith in God helped you feel brave.

Lesson 2: The Word of God Brings Blessings — Joshua 1:8

Read Joshua 1:8 and talk about how studying the scriptures helps us make good choices and feel close to God.
Ask: What blessings do we get when we read God’s word?

Activity:
Make a “Scripture Reading Tracker.” Draw a simple calendar for the week. Each day your child reads or listens to scriptures, they can color in a box or add a sticker.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “I will read God’s word every day.”
Sight words: will, read, every, day

Math Connection:
Count how many days you read scriptures this week. Compare to last week’s number—did you read more?

Elementary Add-On:
Write three ways reading the scriptures helps us “be strong and of a good courage.” Include one scripture that encourages you.

Lesson 3: Faith and Works Go Together — Joshua 2

Explain how Rahab showed faith and courage when she helped the Israelite spies. Talk about how our faith can lead us to do good works, too.

Activity:
Act out the story of Rahab and the spies. Use blankets or chairs to make “walls,” and talk about how Rahab’s bravery helped her family.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “Faith helps me do good things.”
Sight words: helps, me, do, good

Math Connection:
Draw ten blocks to represent the walls of Jericho. Count backward from ten as you “march around the walls” and pretend they fall down!

Elementary Add-On:
Write about one way Rahab showed faith and one way she acted on it. Then write one way you can show faith through your actions this week.

Lesson 4: God Works Wonders — Joshua 3–4

Read about how the Israelites crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. Explain that God performed a miracle to help His people. Talk about ways God blesses us when we have faith.

Activity:
Create a “Jordan River Crossing.” Lay out blue towels or paper to represent water. Let your child walk across as you talk about how God made the path dry.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “God can do wonders.”
Sight words: can, do, God

Math Connection:
Count the “stones of remembrance” from the story (Joshua 4:8–9). Draw twelve circles to represent the stones and number them 1–12.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a paragraph about a “wonder” or blessing you’ve seen in your life that reminds you God is near.

Lesson 5: I Can Choose to Serve Jesus Christ — Joshua 24:15

Read Joshua 24:15 together: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.”
Talk about how we show that we choose to serve Jesus every day through our words, choices, and actions.

Activity:
Make a “Choose to Serve” chart. Draw or write ways to serve Jesus at home, at church, and with friends. Add a star sticker or smiley face each time you serve.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “I choose to serve Jesus.”
Sight words: choose, to, serve, Jesus

Math Connection:
Count how many stars you earn on your service chart this week! Compare with next week’s total.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a short goal statement that finishes this sentence: “I choose to serve Jesus by…” Encourage detailed sentences with examples of service.

Family Discussion

  • When is it hard to be brave? How can God help you?

  • How do scriptures make you strong?

  • What does it mean to show faith through actions?

  • How can we serve Jesus every day?

End your lesson by singing“Choose the Right.” Say a prayer together, thanking God for being with you and helping your family be strong and full of courage.
