Week 3 March: “The Lord Was with Joseph”

Week 3 March: “The Lord Was with Joseph”

Scriptures: Genesis 37–41

The Lord Will Be With Me in Hard Times

Joseph’s life teaches that even when we face unfair treatment or hard trials, God is always with us. Joseph was mistreated by his brothers, falsely accused, and put in prison—but the Lord never left him.

Questions to Discuss:

  • What did Joseph do to stay close to the Lord?

  • How did the Lord show He was with Joseph?

  • Can you think of times when God helped you in hard situations?

Creative At-Home Activity:

  • “God Is With Me” Journal: Children can draw or write one thing that went wrong during their day and then write or draw how God helped or could help.

Song Idea:

  • “Abide with Me!” (Hymns, no. 166). Sing together while talking about the Lord being with us always.

If I Am Faithful, the Lord Will Guide Me

Joseph received messages from God through dreams and learned to understand them even when they were difficult.

Activity Idea – “Dream Messages”:

  • Children can draw a dream and then write or dictate what God might be teaching them through it.

  • Talk about listening to inspiration in everyday life—at home, school, or with friends.

Math & Thinking Add-On:

  • Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream about 7 fat cows and 7 thin cows. Ask children:

    • “If 7 cows are fat and 7 are thin, how many cows are there in total?”

    • “If 2 cows go away, how many are left?”

With the Lord’s Help, I Can Flee Temptation

Joseph refused to sin even when no one else was watching. His story helps children understand the importance of making good choices and avoiding situations that could lead to sin.

Object Lesson:

  • Use two magnets and a paperclip: One magnet is Jesus, the other is Satan. Show how moving closer to the right magnet pulls the paperclip toward it. Explain how moving closer to Jesus helps us resist temptation.

Role-Playing Game:

  • Children can act out scenarios where they might face temptation. Practice saying: “I choose to follow Jesus,” and role-play fleeing from bad choices.

Song Idea:

  • “I Need Thee Every Hour” (Hymns, no. 98). Discuss how turning to the Savior helps us resist temptation.

God Helps Me When Bad Things Happen

Children can identify trials Joseph faced—being sold, imprisoned, or falsely accused—and learn that the Lord’s presence brings strength.

Activity Idea – “Hard Things List”:

  • Children list hard things Joseph experienced, then repeat: “The Lord was with Joseph” after each one.

  • Talk about examples from their own lives and how God helped.

Creative Add-On:

  • “God With Me” Collage: Use magazine cutouts, drawings, or stickers to show ways God helps us when life feels hard.

Discussion:

  • How do we know the Lord is with us today?

  • How can we share experiences of His help with others?

I Can Be Kind to My Family

Joseph’s story encourages children to be peacemakers in the family. Discuss ways to speak kindly, help siblings, and show love even when others are unkind.

Activity Idea – “Family Kindness Role Play”:

  • Children act out different family situations. Ask: “How can you respond with peace and kindness?”

Song Idea:

  • “Speak the Truth in Love” or “Love One Another” (Children’s Songbook, 12–13).

Tracing & Writing (Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners):

  • “God is with me.”

  • “I choose to do right.”

  • “I can help my family.”
