Week 3 July: Trusting God and Following His Ways

Week 3 July: Trusting God and Following His Ways
2 Chronicles 14–16; 20; 26; 30

Even kings faced challenges, made mistakes, and needed to rely on God. Asa and Jehoshaphat trusted the Lord in difficult times. Uzziah became prideful and learned the importance of humility. Hezekiah showed kindness and peacemaking when inviting neighbors to celebrate Passover. These stories help children understand trust, humility, prayer, and peacemaking.

Teaching Ideas for Families

1. Trusting God
Read 2 Chronicles 14–16 and 20 together. Talk about how Asa and Jehoshaphat trusted God when facing challenges (2 Chronicles 14:11; 20:3–5, 12).

Activity idea: Show something children trust, like an umbrella or jacket, and compare it to trusting God to guide and protect us. Ask, “How can we show that we trust the Lord?”

2. God Answers Prayers
Read 2 Chronicles 20:1–29 with your children. Discuss Jehoshaphat’s prayer and how the Lord answered. Talk about times God has answered prayers in ways children didn’t expect.

Activity idea: Draw a picture of something you prayed for and how God helped.

Sing together: “I Pray in Faith” (Children’s Songbook, 14).

Optional discussion: Ask, “Why can we trust God to hear our prayers?”

3. Being Humble
Read 2 Chronicles 26:3–23. Introduce Uzziah’s accomplishments (verses 3–15) and discuss how pride can lead to mistakes (verses 16–23).

Activity idea: Build a tower with blocks or cups. Add one block for each accomplishment. Discuss what could make the tower fall, then knock it down to illustrate pride. Talk about ways to stay humble.

4. Being a Peacemaker
Read 2 Chronicles 30 together. Discuss how Hezekiah invited neighbors to celebrate Passover even though some had not fully followed the law (2 Chronicles 30:18–19).

Activity idea: Talk about ways children can show kindness and make peace with others. Draw a picture of themselves helping or being kind to a friend.

Early Elementary Add-On

Reading & Writing Extension:
Write a short journal entry: “How I Can Trust God and Follow His Ways.” Encourage children to describe one way they can pray, be humble, or make peace.

Math Connection:
Create a “King’s Steps Chart.” Draw 5–10 steps representing faithful choices. Practice addition and subtraction with the steps:

  • 5 steps − 2 wrong choices = 3 steps forward

  • 3 good choices + 2 more = 5 steps forward

Art or Reflection Project:
Make a “Trust and Humility Poster.” Draw pictures or write words showing how they can trust God, pray, stay humble, and make peace with others.

Family Thought:
Even kings needed God’s help to make the right choices. By trusting Him, praying for guidance, staying humble, and being peacemakers, we can follow Jesus Christ and experience His blessings every day.
