Week 2 July: Trusting God and Following His Word
Week 2 July: Trusting God and Following His Word
2 Kings 18; 19; 22–23
Even kings needed to trust God, follow His guidance, and keep their covenants. Hezekiah trusted Heavenly Father and acted with faith. Josiah followed God’s commandments and used the scriptures to lead his people. These stories help children understand trust, obedience, and the importance of scripture in guiding choices.
Teaching Ideas for Families
1. Trusting God
Read 2 Kings 18:3–6 and 19:14–19 together. Talk about what made Hezekiah a good king and how he showed trust in the Lord. Look at a picture of Jesus and discuss why we can trust Him.
Activity idea: Have children draw a picture of something they can trust God with, like a problem, a friend, or a choice they need to make.
Optional discussion: Ask, “How can we show that we trust the Lord every day?”
2. Being Trustworthy
Read 2 Kings 22:1–7 together. Talk about how old Josiah was when he became king and how he followed the Lord. Discuss the workers who were trusted with temple money and why they were trustworthy.
Activity idea: Children can think of one thing they are trusted with at home or school and draw it. Discuss how they can be trustworthy like the workers in Josiah’s story.
Optional discussion: Ask, “What can we do to show we are trustworthy with what God gives us?”
3. Learning from the Scriptures
Read 2 Kings 22:8–11 and 23:2–3. Share the story of how the scriptures were found and talk about what might happen if we didn’t have them. Discuss why the scriptures help us follow Jesus Christ.
Activity idea: Hide a favorite scripture in the room and have children find it. After finding it, talk about how scriptures guide our choices.
Sing together: “Search, Ponder, and Pray” (Children’s Songbook, 109). Ask, “How do scriptures help us ‘walk after the Lord’?”
4. Keeping Covenants
Read 2 Kings 23:1–3 together. Discuss the covenant Josiah and his people made to live God’s commandments.
Activity idea: Have children place their hands on their hearts and share one way they can keep a covenant. You can also have them walk in place while talking about “walking after the Lord.”
Optional discussion: Ask, “How does keeping our covenants help us follow Jesus Christ?”
