Week 2 September: Repentance, the Temple, and Jesus Christ

Week 2 September: Repentance, the Temple, and Jesus Christ

Isaiah 1:2–4, 16–19

Because of Jesus Christ, I can repent and be clean.
In Isaiah 1:2–4, read together and find reasons the Lord was not happy with the people. Notice the comparison with animals in verse 3—who is our “master”? How do we show we know Him?

Activity:

  • To visualize Isaiah 1:16–18, find something bright red and something pure white. Or work together to wash something.

  • Discuss: How do we become unclean spiritually? How does Jesus help us become clean?

Math Connection:

  • Count objects that are red versus white.

  • Compare totals: Which is greater, red or white? Talk about how Jesus transforms the red (sin) into white (clean).

Isaiah 2:2–4

In the temple, I learn about Jesus Christ.
Isaiah foresaw a time when “the mountain of the Lord’s house” would attract people from “all nations.” Help children feel excited about going to the Lord’s house:

Activity:

  • Draw a picture of your home. Then draw the “Lord’s house” (temple).

  • Add many people coming to the temple, including family members.

Discussion & Song:

  • Read Isaiah 2:2–3 and identify things that inspire you to go to the temple.

  • Read Isaiah 2:4 and discuss how the temple brings peace.

  • Sing “I Love to See the Temple” (Children’s Songbook, 95). Pause to ask children what they learned from the song about the temple and its purposes.

Math Connection:

  • Count how many people or families are drawn going to the temple.

  • Ask children to estimate how many more could join. Discuss addition and comparison: “If 5 more come, how many total?”

Isaiah 7:14; 9:6–7

Jesus Christ came to earth to be my Savior.
Introduce Isaiah’s prophecies: talk about titles like president, bishop, or teacher. What do these titles tell us?

Activity:

  • Help children find titles of Jesus Christ in Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6–7. Discuss what each title teaches about Him.

  • Read “Isaiah the Prophet” (Old Testament Stories, 150–51). Pause to ask what Isaiah knew about Jesus many years before His birth.

  • Compare with Matthew 1:21–23; Luke 1:31–33 to show how Isaiah’s prophecies were fulfilled.

Math Connection:

  • Make a simple chart with the titles of Jesus from Isaiah (e.g., Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace).

  • Count the letters in each title. Compare which title is longest and shortest. Discuss why all titles are important even if some are “longer” than others.

Family Thought & Reflection:

  • How does repentance help us come closer to Jesus?

  • What can we do this week to prepare to feel peace at the temple?

  • How can we remember the titles and roles of Jesus Christ in our daily life?

Preschool Add-On:

  • Letter of the Week: T for Temple / Trust

  • Number: 2 (two colors: red & white)

  • Shape: Triangle (temple mountain)

  • Color: White (purity, cleanliness)

  • Sight Words: I, can, be, clean

Tracing Sentences:

  • I can repent and be clean.

  • I can learn about Jesus Christ.

Craft Idea:

  • Make a “Temple Crowd” collage. Children draw or cut out people and paste them climbing a paper mountain to the Lord’s house.

Early Elementary Add-On:

  • Reading & Writing Extension: Write a short journal entry: “How Jesus Helps Me Repent and Be Clean.”

  • Math Extension: Keep a daily tally of acts of kindness or ways they “come closer to Jesus.” Graph the totals at the end of the week.
