Week 2 October: Learning from Isaiah About Fasting, Sabbath, and the Savior’s Light

Isaiah 58:6–11

Fasting blesses me and others in need.
To help children understand fasting, read Isaiah 58:6–11 together. Ask questions such as: Why do we fast? How do we fast? How can fasting bless us and help others? You can also reference Guide to the Scriptures, “Fast, Fasting.”

Activities:

  • Share a personal experience of fasting and the blessings received.

  • Invite children to think of ways they could bless others while fasting. They could draw pictures or write ideas for acts of service.

  • Make a simple chart:

Discussion:

  • How does helping others make fasting meaningful?

  • What can we do this week to serve someone while fasting?

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of blessings or service ideas the children come up with.

  • Ask: If we add 3 new blessings next week, how many are there in total?

Isaiah 58:13–14

The Sabbath can be a delight to me.
Read Isaiah 58:13–14. Point out the days of the week on a calendar and invite children to say them aloud. Emphasize the Sabbath as “a delight” and share why it is special to you.

Activities:

  • Children can draw pictures or write ideas about ways to delight in the Sabbath and place them in a “Box of Sabbath Delights.”

  • Pull an idea from the box when they need inspiration for a Sabbath activity.

  • Discuss ways to make the Sabbath a happy, meaningful day for family and friends.

Music Connection:

  • Sing a favorite Sabbath song or hymn together.

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of activities listed in the “Box of Sabbath Delights.”

  • Ask: If we add 2 more activities this week, how many activities will be in the box?

Isaiah 60:1–3

The Savior is like a light for me.
Read Isaiah 60:1–3. Invite children to close their eyes and open them when they hear the word “light,” then close them when they hear “darkness.” Explain that Jesus Christ and His gospel are like a light guiding us back to Heavenly Father.

Activities:

  • Show a picture of Jesus Christ, such as Our Light by Dan Wilson, and ask children what it means that He is a light in their lives.

  • Have children draw a picture of themselves in darkness and then add a light to represent Jesus’ guidance.

Discussion:

  • How does Jesus’ light help us make good choices?

  • When have you felt His guidance in your life?

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of “lights” children draw in their pictures.

  • Ask: If each child draws 3 lights and there are 4 children, how many lights are there in total?

Isaiah 65:17–25

When Jesus comes again, He will bring peace and joy.
Read Isaiah 65:17–25 together. Discuss how life will be different in the “new earth” Isaiah describes. Ask: Why will this be a time to “glad and rejoice for ever” (verse 18)?

Activities:

  • Invite children to share things they are looking forward to when the Savior comes again.

  • Sing a song about the Second Coming, such as “When the Savior Comes Again” (Gospel Library).

  • Discuss how we can prepare our hearts for the Savior’s return.

Discussion:

  • How can we bring peace and joy to our homes today?

  • What are ways we can help others look forward to the Savior’s return?

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of ways children suggest to prepare for the Savior’s coming.

  • Ask: If each child adds 2 more ways, how many are there in total?

Family Thought & Reflection:

  • How can fasting, Sabbath observance, and following the Savior’s light help us and others?

  • How can we share joy and peace with those around us?

  • Letter of the Week: F for Fasting / Faith / Fun

  • Number: 3 (light, joy, peace)

  • Shape: Star (light guiding us)

  • Color: Yellow (light, joy)

Tracing Sentences:

  • Jesus Christ is the light that guides me.

  • I can delight in the Lord on the Sabbath.

Craft Idea:

  • Make a “Light in the Darkness”: children draw a dark background and add a bright light (Jesus’ guidance) with words or pictures showing how He helps them.

Early Elementary Add-On:

  • Reading & Writing Extension: Write a short paragraph: “How I Can Follow Jesus Christ This Week.”

  • Math Extension: Make a tally chart of daily acts of service, Sabbath joys, or light-guided choices during the week.

  Week 3 December: Learning About Jesus Through the Old Testament and Christmas Traditions The Old Testament teaches me about Jesus. You and your children can use Christmas decorations to start a conversation about Jesus Christ. Talk about how a Christmas star, lights, or a gift can remind us of the Savior. Week 5: God Helps Me Do Hard Things This week focuses on Enoch and other examples from the scriptures showing that Heavenly Father helps us face challenges. Children can learn that they are never alone when they try to do what is right. Teaching Idea: Acting Out Challenges Read Moses 6:26–34 together, then invite your children to act out times when they felt nervous about doing something hard—like learning a new skill, sharing a testimony, or helping someone. Talk about how God helped Enoch and how He can help them too. Reading Activity: Have children dictate a short story about a time they did something hard with God’s help. You can write it down and let them “read” it back to you, practicing storytelling and comprehension.
