Week 2 November: Learning from Daniel About Faith, Choices, and Prayer
Week 2 November: Learning from Daniel About Faith, Choices, and Prayer
Daniel 1; 3; 6
Jesus will help me do what is right even when it’s hard.
To help your children learn from the inspiring stories in Daniel, you could find pictures of the events in Daniel 1, 3, and 6 (see the Gospel Art Book, nos. 23, 25, 26). Place the pictures face down and invite a child to turn one over and tell what story it represents.
Activities:
-
Read “Daniel and His Friends,” “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,” and “Daniel and the Lions’ Den” (Old Testament Stories, pp. 154–65).
-
Discuss situations where children might feel pressured to make a wrong choice. How can Jesus help us make the right choice?
-
Sing “Choose the Right” (Hymns, no. 239).
Math Connection:
-
Count how many stories from Daniel you read.
-
Ask: If each story has 3 main events, how many events are there in total?
Daniel 1:1–17
Heavenly Father wants me to take care of my body.
Reading about Daniel and his friends refusing the king’s meat and wine can lead to a conversation about the law of health Heavenly Father has given us today (Doctrine and Covenants 89).
Activities:
-
Look for blessings Daniel and his friends received (Daniel 1:15–17).
-
Compare them to the blessings promised in the Word of Wisdom (Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21).
Math Connection:
-
Count the blessings mentioned in Daniel 1:15–17.
-
Ask: If there are 3 blessings and we add 2 more from the Word of Wisdom, how many blessings are there in total?
Daniel 2
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the kingdom of God on earth.
As you read Daniel 2:31–35, 44–45, invite children to draw Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Explain that the stone in the dream represents The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Activities:
-
Talk about what the dream teaches about the Church.
-
Show pictures of events from the Restoration of the Church (Gospel Art Book, nos. 90–95).
Math Connection:
-
Count the elements in the dream (e.g., statue parts, stone).
-
Ask: If each child draws 2 elements of the dream and there are 4 children, how many elements are drawn in total?
Daniel 6
Heavenly Father wants me to pray often.
Discuss why praying was so important to Daniel and why it is important to us today. Children can draw pictures of themselves praying in various situations.
Activities:
-
Share why prayer is important to each family member.
-
Use drawings to teach each other that we can pray anywhere, anytime, and about anything.
Math Connection:
-
Count how many prayer situations children draw.
-
Ask: If each child draws 3 situations and there are 5 children, how many prayer situations are there in total?
Family Thought & Reflection:
-
How can Jesus help me make the right choices?
-
Why is it important to take care of my body?
-
How does praying often bless our lives and families?
-
How can we recognize The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as God’s kingdom on earth?
