Week 2 May: Love the Lord Thy God
Week 2 May
Deuteronomy 6; 18; 29–30
“Love the Lord Thy God”
Scripture Focus
Moses taught the Israelites to love God with all their heart, soul, and might. He reminded them to remember God’s words, to follow the prophet, and to keep their covenants. When we love and follow God, He blesses and strengthens us.
Lesson 1: I Can Love God with All My Heart — Deuteronomy 6:5
Talk about what it means to love God with all your heart, soul, and might. Draw a heart, a body, and an arm to represent each part of the verse. As you read, have your child point to each picture. Discuss how we show love for God through kindness, prayer, and obedience.
Activity:
Cut out a large paper heart. On it, draw or write ways your family shows love for God—such as serving, praying, or reading scriptures together.
Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “I love God with all my heart.”
Sight words: love, God, heart, all
Math Connection:
Draw several small hearts. Count them together, group them by color, or make patterns such as red-blue-red-blue.
Elementary Add-On:
Write three sentences describing how someone can show love for God “with all their might.” Encourage the use of action words (serve, help, share, obey).
Lesson 2: I Can Keep God’s Word in My Heart — Deuteronomy 6:6–15
Explain that God wanted the Israelites to keep His words close and remember Him each day. Discuss how we can remember the Lord—by reading scriptures, praying, or putting kind reminders around our home.
Activity:
Make a “Scripture Reminder Card.” Write or draw a favorite verse and tape it where your child can see it each day—on the mirror, fridge, or bedroom door.
Reading Practice:
Trace the phrase: “I will remember God’s word.”
Sight words: will, remember, word, God
Math Connection:
Count how many scripture reminder cards you make as a family. Number each card and review one each day.
Elementary Add-On:
Read Matthew 4:1–10 together and talk about how Jesus used scriptures to stay strong. Write one verse that helps you when you need courage or comfort.
Lesson 3: Prophets Teach Us about Jesus Christ — Deuteronomy 18:15–18
Help your child understand that Moses was a prophet who taught the people about Jesus Christ. Just like Moses, prophets today teach us to follow the Savior.
Activity:
Look at pictures of Moses and Jesus. Talk about what they both did to help God’s people. Make a simple “Prophets Teach of Jesus” poster with drawings of things prophets have said or done.
Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “Prophets teach about Jesus.”
Sight words: teach, about, Jesus
Math Connection:
Make a pattern using prophet pictures or names—Moses, Jesus, Moses, Jesus—and count how many times the pattern repeats.
Elementary Add-On:
Choose a recent message from the prophet. Write or draw how it helps us follow Jesus Christ.
Lesson 4: Because of My Covenants, I Am Part of God’s People — Deuteronomy 29:12–13; 30:8–10
Talk about how the Israelites made promises (covenants) with Heavenly Father. Explain that when we are baptized, we also make promises to follow Jesus Christ and keep His commandments.
Activity:
Create a “Covenant Chain.” Cut paper strips and write one promise on each—such as “follow Jesus,” “serve others,” or “choose the right.” Link them together to make a chain that reminds your family of your promises to God.
Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “I keep my promises to God.”
Sight words: keep, my, promises, God
Math Connection:
Count how many links are in your covenant chain. Add more each time you remember a new way to keep a promise to Heavenly Father.
Elementary Add-On:
Write about a covenant we make at baptism. What promises do we make, and what promises does God make to us?
