Week 2 March: Being Kind, Choosing Eternal Things, and Loving Family
Week 2 March: Being Kind, Choosing Eternal Things, and Loving Family
Scriptures: Genesis 24:10–21; 25:21–34; 28:10–22; 32:6–11; 33:1–4
I Can Be Kind to Others
Rebekah’s example of kindness shows us how thoughtful actions make a difference. Help your children act out the story of Rebekah offering water to Abraham’s servant and his camels. Afterward, ask: How did her choices bless others? How can we show kindness in our home, classroom, or neighborhood?
Song Idea:
-
Sing “Kindness Begins with Me” (Children’s Songbook, 145). Have children stand or clap when they hear “kindness” or related words.
Creative At-Home Craft:
-
Kindness Rocks: Paint or decorate small rocks with kind words or pictures. Place them in a special area or hide them outside for someone to find.
-
Act of Kindness Cards: Fold paper into small cards. Children can draw or write an act of kindness they will do this week.
Tracing & Writing (Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners):
-
“I can be kind like Rebekah.”
-
“Kindness makes the world brighter.”
-
“I show love with my actions.”
Eternal Things Are More Important Than Worldly Things
Jacob and Esau’s story shows the value of eternal priorities over temporary desires. Invite children to consider: If someone asked them to trade something important for something small, what would they choose?
Activity Idea – “Sort It Out”:
-
Provide children with a small set of objects or pictures.
-
Ask them to sort them into “Eternal Things” and “Worldly Things.”
-
Discuss why some things last forever and some do not.
Math Add-On:
-
“Jacob had 5 lentil bowls and Esau had 3. How many bowls are there altogether?”
-
“If Jacob traded 1 bowl for 2 coins, how many items did he have then?”
Covenants Help Me Return to Heavenly Father
Jacob’s ladder reminds us that covenants bring us closer to God. Children can pretend to climb a ladder, a staircase, or steps taped on the floor. At each step, discuss promises we make to Heavenly Father, like baptism or temple covenants.
Craft Add-On:
-
Covenant Ladder Mobile: Cut ladder rungs from colored paper and write a covenant or promise on each. Hang from a coat hanger to create a mobile.
-
Step Stones: Use small paper or cardboard “stones” to represent steps toward God. Children can decorate each step with a covenant they are learning about.
Tracing & Writing (Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners):
-
“I make promises to God.”
-
“Covenants help me grow.”
-
“I follow Heavenly Father.”
Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ Can Help Me Love My Family
Jacob prayed for help when he was nervous about meeting Esau. Encourage children to share times they’ve asked Heavenly Father or Jesus for help in getting along with siblings, friends, or classmates. Discuss how prayers bring peace and help us make kind choices.
Activity Idea – “Peaceful Path Game”:
-
Lay a path of paper, cards, or small objects.
-
At each step, have children name a kind or loving action they can do for family members.
-
At the end of the path, celebrate with a group hug or a special song about love.
Song Idea:
-
“Love One Another” (Children’s Songbook, 12–13) or any favorite song about family and love.
Reading & Math Add-On for Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners

-
“I can love my family.”

“Jacob climbed 5 steps, then 3 more. How many steps total?”
-
“If Jacob had 6 coins and gave 2 to a servant, how many does he have left?”
