Week 2 April: Moses and Aaron in the Court of Pharaoh
Week 2 April: Moses and Aaron in the Court of Pharaoh
Illustration: Moses and Aaron in the court of Pharaoh, by Robert T. Barrett
Theme: “Remember This Day, in Which Ye Came Out from Egypt”
Plague after plague afflicted Egypt, yet Pharaoh refused to release the Israelites. God continually demonstrated His power and gave Pharaoh opportunities to acknowledge Him: “that I am the Lord” and “there is none like me in all the earth” (Exodus 7:5; 9:14). Moses and the Israelites watched with awe, and their faith in God strengthened.
After nine plagues failed, the tenth—the death of the firstborn—finally ended the captivity. This shows us that, as with spiritual captivity, there is only one true way to be saved: through Jesus Christ, the Firstborn, whose sacrifice delivers us from sin.
I Can Choose to Soften My Heart
Even though we hope our hearts are aligned with God’s will, sometimes they are hard. Pharaoh’s responses to the plagues illustrate what a hardened heart looks like.
-
Read about having a soft heart in 1 Nephi 2:16; Mosiah 3:19; Alma 24:7–8; 62:41; Ether 12:27.
-
Think about what changes you can make to keep your heart soft toward God.
Jesus Christ Can Save Me Through His Atonement
The Passover (Exodus 12) symbolized how the Lord delivered the Israelites from bondage, pointing to Jesus Christ delivering us from sin.
-
The lamb reminds us of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
-
Blood on the doorposts shows how Jesus’ sacrifice protects us spiritually.
-
Unleavened bread reminds us to live righteously.
-
Bitter herbs help us remember the sorrow sin brings.
-
Eating in haste reminds us to follow Christ immediately.
-
The destroyer shows God’s power over evil.
-
Israelites set free points to the true freedom Christ offers.
The sacrament helps us remember this deliverance through Christ (Exodus 12:14–17, 24–27; 13:1–16).
Teaching Children
The Lord Has Power Over All Things
-
Draw pictures of the 10 plagues (Exodus 7–11).
-
Talk about how the Lord showed His power to the Israelites and Egyptians.
-
Ask: How has the Lord shown His power in your life?
The Lord Can Help Me Have a Soft Heart
-
Compare a hard object (rock) and a soft object (sponge). Pour water over them to show how easily a soft heart receives God’s word.
-
Read Exodus 8:28–32; 9:7. Ask which object represents Pharaoh’s heart.
-
List actions that show a hard heart (unkind words, selfishness) and a soft heart (sharing, listening, obeying).
The Sacrament Helps Me Remember Jesus
-
Show a picture of the sacrament and talk about how it reminds us of Christ.
-
Find the word “remember” in the sacrament prayers (Moroni 4–5).
-
Sing a hymn about the sacrament and notice the peaceful feeling it brings.
