Week 1 September: Wisdom, Trust, and Kind Words
Week 1 September: Wisdom, Trust, and Kind Words
Proverbs 1:7; 2:5; 15:33; 16:6; Ecclesiastes 12:13
To “fear God” means to love and obey Him.
To help your children understand passages about fearing God, you could substitute the word “fear” with words like reverence, love, or obedience (see also Hebrews 12:28). How does this change the way we think about these verses? How do we show that we fear the Lord?
Activity:
-
Create a “Fear God” chart. Draw three columns: Love, Obey, Respect. Have children write or draw examples of each in their lives.
-
Discuss examples from scriptures or daily life where they can show love and obedience to God.
Math Connection:
-
Count the number of examples in each column.
-
Compare columns: Which has more examples? Which has fewer?
-
Add one new way to love or obey God each day and update the totals.
Proverbs 3:5–7
I can trust in the Lord with all my heart.
Make up actions to go with Proverbs 3:5–7:
-
Make a heart with your hands.
-
Lean to one side.
-
Walk in place.
-
Point to your eyes.
Discuss how these actions help show trusting Jesus Christ with all our hearts.
Activity:
-
To illustrate “lean not unto thine own understanding,” invite children to lean against something sturdy (like a wall) versus something not sturdy (like a broom).
-
Or lean a stick or pencil against objects of varying sturdiness (book, piece of paper). Discuss why it is important to trust in the Lord and not rely only on ourselves.
Math Connection:
-
Measure how far objects fall or bend when leaning against sturdy versus unsteady objects.
-
Compare lengths or angles. Ask: Which leaned the farthest? Which stayed straight?
Proverbs 15:1, 18
I can use kind words.
Think of situations where your children (or you) might feel angry. Read Proverbs 15:1 and discuss how a “soft answer” could change the situation.
Activity:
-
Role-play scenarios where children practice soft, kind answers instead of reacting with anger.
-
Discuss times they were “slow to anger” (Proverbs 15:18) and what they were quick to do instead, like think of Jesus, pray, or walk away.
Song Connection:
-
Sing “Love Is Spoken Here” (Children’s Songbook, 190–91) to reinforce kindness.
Math Connection:
-
Keep a tally chart of times children successfully used kind words throughout the day.
-
Count how many times they chose kindness versus reacting with anger. Discuss ways to improve the tally each day.
Family Thought:
-
Reflect on Proverbs 3:6: “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Talk about ways children can acknowledge God in daily life, like helping others, saying prayers, or choosing to be kind.
-
Consider ending the week with a family discussion: How did our words, actions, and trust in God guide our paths this week?
