Week 1 October: Learning from Isaiah About Hope, Atonement, and Covenants

Week 1 October: Learning from Isaiah About Hope, Atonement, and Covenants

Isaiah 50–52

The future is bright for the Lord’s people.
Even though the Israelites spent many years in captivity—and that captivity was partly because of their own choices—the Lord wants His people to look forward with hope.

Activity:

  • Create a chart with three columns:

    1. What I learn about God (see Isaiah 50:2, 5–9; 51:3–8, 15–16; 52:3, 9–10)

    2. Messages of hope (see Isaiah 50:9; 51:3–5, 11–12, 22–23; 52:9–10)

    3. What I can do to make hope a reality (see Isaiah 50:10; 51:1–2, 6–9; 52:1–3, 9–11)

  • Discuss how Isaiah’s prophecies show that God helps His people even in hard times.

  • Connect these messages to modern life: how can we trust the Lord when we face challenges?

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of messages of hope found in the chart.

  • Ask: If we add one new hope from our lives, how many messages are there in total?

Isaiah 53

Jesus Christ took upon Himself my sins and sorrows.
Isaiah 53 beautifully describes the Savior’s redemptive mission.

Activities:

  • Discuss how heroes in stories and movies rescue people, then contrast that with Jesus Christ’s Atonement.

  • Read each verse and pause to reflect on the griefs, sorrows, and transgressions He bore—for all people and specifically for you. Replace “we” and “our” with “I” and “my” for personal connection.

  • Find pictures of the Savior’s Atonement (Gospel Art Book, nos. 56–60) and match verses from Isaiah 53 to the pictures.

Music Connection:

  • Sing “Behold the Great Redeemer Die” (Hymns, no. 191).

Math Connection:

  • Count how many events or sufferings of the Savior are described in Isaiah 53.

  • Discuss: If each verse describes 2 or 3 sufferings, how many sufferings are there in 5 verses?

Isaiah 54; 57:15–19

Jesus Christ wants me to return to Him.
Isaiah 54 and 57 remind us that no matter our sins or weaknesses, the Savior desires our return. Discuss words in Isaiah 54:4–10 and 57:15–19 that show how the Savior feels about us.

Activity:

  • Share a personal experience where you felt distant but returned to the Lord.

  • Encourage children to draw a heart representing themselves and add words or pictures showing ways Jesus helps them return.

Math Connection:

  • Count the words or images added to the hearts.

  • Ask: If each child adds 5 words, and there are 3 children, how many words are on the hearts in total?

Isaiah 55–56

The Lord invites all to “take hold of my covenant.”
God invites everyone to come unto Him. Even those who feel “utterly separated” can take part in His covenant (Isaiah 56:3).

Activity:

  • Highlight verses that describe attitudes and actions of those who “take hold of my covenant” (Isaiah 56:4–7).

  • Talk about how children and families can live covenant-like behaviors today—kindness, service, prayer, and scripture study.

Math Connection:

  • Count the number of covenant actions listed.

  • Ask: If we add 2 more actions from our week, how many total covenant actions are there?

Family Thought & Reflection:

  • How can we trust the Lord and look to the future with hope?

  • How does Jesus Christ’s Atonement help us every day?

  • How can we live the Lord’s covenants in our homes and communities?

Preschool Add-On:

  • Letter of the Week: C for Covenant / Comfort / Christ

  • Number: 3 (hope, Atonement, covenant)

  • Shape: Heart

  • Color: Gold (hope, divine blessings)

  • Sight Words: I, can, Lord, help

Tracing Sentences:

  • Jesus Christ took upon Himself my sins and sorrows.

  • I can take hold of the Lord’s covenant.

Craft Idea:

  • Make a “Covenant Heart”: children draw a heart and write or draw ways they can keep the Lord’s covenant.

Early Elementary Add-On:

  • Reading & Writing Extension: Write a short paragraph: “How I Can Follow Jesus Christ This Week.”

  • Math Extension: Make a tally chart of daily acts of kindness, prayers, or scripture reading during the week.
