Week 1 May: Rebel Not Ye Against the Lord, Neither Fear

Week 1 May

Numbers 11–14; 20–24; 27

“Rebel Not Ye Against the Lord, Neither Fear”

Scripture Focus

The Israelites spent many years traveling through the wilderness on their way to the promised land. During that time, they learned to trust the Lord, follow His prophet, and keep their faith even when things were hard. We can learn from their experiences and remember that when we look to Jesus Christ in faith, He can strengthen and guide us, too.

Lesson 1: I Can Be Thankful for What God Has Given Me — Numbers 11:4–10

Talk about how the Israelites had seen many miracles, but they still complained instead of being thankful. Ask your child to think of blessings your family enjoys—food, home, love, and Jesus Christ’s gospel.

Activity:
Make a “Thankful Manna Jar.” Each person draws or writes something they are thankful for on small papers and puts them in the jar. Read one each day during the week.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read the phrase: “I can be thankful for what God gives me.”
Sight words: thankful, gives, love, food

Math Connection:
Count the pieces of “manna” (small paper circles or cotton balls) you collect. Sort them by color or size and count how many blessings you listed as a family.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a short gratitude list and use descriptive words (such as “warm blanket,” “soft pillow,” or “tasty bread”) to practice adjectives while focusing on blessings.

Lesson 2: The Lord Wants Me to Follow His Prophet — Numbers 12

Explain that Aaron and Miriam didn’t listen to Moses, the prophet, and it made the Lord sad. Talk about how Heavenly Father chooses prophets to lead and guide us.

Activity:
Look at a picture of the current prophet and name ways we can follow him—praying, keeping commandments, serving others, or studying the scriptures.

Creative Extension:
Make a “Follow the Prophet” path with tape or paper squares on the floor. As your child walks the path, name things they can do to follow the prophet.

Reading Practice:
Trace the sentence: “I will follow the prophet.”
Sight words: will, follow, prophet

Elementary Add-On:
Read a short talk or quote from the prophet and summarize what it teaches. Have your child write two sentences about one thing they can do to follow that counsel.

Lesson 3: I Can Look to Jesus Christ — Numbers 21:4–9

Tell the story of the Israelites who were bitten by snakes and could be healed if they looked at the brass serpent Moses raised. Help your child understand that Jesus Christ heals us when we turn to Him.

Activity:
Create a simple paper serpent. On the back, write or draw ways to “look to Jesus”—praying, forgiving, showing kindness, or reading scriptures.

Reading Practice:
Trace the phrase: “I will look to Jesus.”
Sight words: look, to, Jesus

Math Connection:
Use pattern blocks or paper shapes to make a serpent pattern—red, blue, red, blue—and count how many you used.

Elementary Add-On:
Read Alma 33:19–20 or Helaman 8:13–15 and write one sentence explaining how looking to Christ helps us feel peace and healing.

Lesson 4: I Can Follow God’s Will — Numbers 22–24

Tell the story of Balaam and Balak, and how Balaam wanted to do what was right, even when others tried to tempt him.

Activity:
Play a simple game of choices: hold up two pictures (good choice vs. bad choice). Ask your child which one follows God’s will—sharing, praying, or telling the truth.

Reading Practice:
Trace and read: “I will choose the right.”
Sight words: choose, right, God

Math Connection:
Make a “choice chart.” Add a check mark for every good choice made during the day. Count how many you have by the end of the week.

Elementary Add-On:
Write a short story about a time when it was hard to make the right choice but you followed what you knew was right.

Family Discussion

  • Why is it important to be thankful for what we have?

  • How can we follow the prophet today?

  • What does it mean to “look to Jesus Christ”?

  • How can we choose the right, even when it’s hard?

End your family time with a prayer thanking Heavenly Father for prophets, blessings, and the Savior who helps us stay on the right path.
