Week 1 July: God Works Miracles

Week 1 July: God Works Miracles
2 Kings 4–6

God blesses those who trust Him, obey His guidance, and remember that He is always with them. Elisha performed miracles that showed Heavenly Father’s love—sometimes in dramatic ways, like raising a child, and sometimes quietly, like multiplying a widow’s oil. These stories help children understand the power of faith, obedience, and God’s presence even in hard times.

These stories help children see that God works miracles for those who trust Him, follow His guidance, and rely on His help.

Teaching Ideas for Families

1. God Works Miracles
Read 2 Kings 4:1–7, 14–17, 32–35, 38–44 together. Talk about what a miracle is and invite children to name miracles they have seen or experienced.

Activity idea: Create a “Miracle Hunt.” Use pictures from the Gospel Art Book or drawings to represent each miracle in the chapter. Children can match the picture to the verse it represents.

Optional discussion: Ask, “What do these miracles teach us about God’s love and care?” Encourage children to share times they felt God’s help.

2. Obey God’s Prophet
Read 2 Kings 5:1–15 together. Discuss Naaman’s story and why he was hesitant to wash in the Jordan River. Talk about how following the prophet’s instructions led to blessings.

Activity idea: Use small bowls of water to act out Naaman washing seven times. Children can count each time and discuss how obedience brings blessings.

Optional discussion: Emphasize 2 Kings 5:13, where Naaman’s servants helped him choose to obey. Ask children to think of ways they can help friends or family follow God’s guidance.

3. God Is Always With Me
Read 2 Kings 6:8–17 together. Have children imagine being surrounded by an enemy army. Close their eyes while you read verses 16–17. When you say “open his eyes,” have them open their eyes and discuss what the servant saw.

Activity idea: Draw or act out angels surrounding the prophet. Talk about times children have felt God’s presence, even when they felt alone.

Optional discussion: Ask, “How does knowing God is always with us help us feel brave?”

Preschool Add-On

Letter of the Week: M for Miracle
Number: 7 (Naaman washed seven times)
Shape: Circle (jars of oil, water bowls)
Color: Yellow (oil)

Sight Words: I, can, trust, God

Tracing Sentences:
I can trust God.
God helps me every day.

Math Connection:

  • Count 7 washes for Naaman.

  • Practice simple addition: 3 + 4 = 7; subtraction: 7 − 3 = 4.

Reading Connection:
Read a short story about helping others or obeying instructions. Ask, “What would Elisha do?” or “How can I trust God?”

Craft Idea:
Make a “Miracle Jar.” Draw a small jar and add pictures or words representing miracles children have seen or blessings they are thankful for.

Early Elementary Add-On

Reading & Writing Extension:
Write a short journal entry: “How God Has Blessed Me.” Encourage children to describe one way God has helped them or answered a prayer.

Math Connection:
Create a “Blessing Step Chart.” Draw 10 steps leading to a heart or temple. Each step represents a faithful or obedient choice. Practice addition and subtraction:

  • 10 steps − 4 wrong choices = 6 steps forward

  • 3 good choices + 2 more = 5 steps forward

Art or Reflection Project:
Make a “Miracle Poster.” Draw or collage pictures of miracles in Elisha’s stories. Write or draw ways God has been with them in their own lives.

Family Thought:
Even when life feels scary, confusing, or hard, God works miracles for those who trust Him. By exercising faith, obeying His guidance, and remembering that He is always with us, we can see His blessings in our lives. Sharing these stories and personal experiences helps children understand God’s love and power.
