Week 1 February - March: Trusting God’s Promises and Obeying Him

Week 1 February - March: Trusting God’s Promises and Obeying Him

Scriptures: Genesis 17:15–21; 18:14; 21:1–7; 19:15–26; 22:1–14

I Can Trust God to Keep His Promises

Abraham and Sarah waited many years to have a child, but they trusted God would keep His promise. You can help children understand patience and trust by connecting it to things they have waited for in their own lives.

Activity Idea – “Promise Chain”:

  • Cut strips of paper and have children write or draw promises from God or their family that they trust.

  • Link the strips into a chain and display it somewhere visible.

  • Talk about how each promise connects us to God’s love and faithfulness.

Counting & Math Activity:

  • Count the years Abraham and Sarah waited for Isaac.

  • Word Problem Examples:

    1. “Sarah waited 10 years, then 5 more years for a baby. How many years in all?”

    2. “Abraham had 4 camels and 3 goats. How many animals did he have?”

    3. “There were 2 angels visiting Abraham. Then 3 more came. How many angels in total?”

I Can Flee Wickedness

Lot’s family escaped Sodom because they obeyed God and avoided evil. Children can learn what it means to “flee” from things that are wrong today.

Activity Idea – “Safe Path Game”:

  • Create a simple path on the floor with tape.

  • Add “obstacles” or “temptations” to avoid as children walk along the path.

  • Talk about how making good choices keeps us safe and close to God.

Tracing & Writing Practice (Older Preschoolers & Kindergarteners):

  • “I obey God’s commandments.”

  • “I choose the right.”

  • “God keeps His promises.”

Abraham Obeyed the Lord

The story of Abraham and Isaac teaches children about obedience, sacrifice, and trust. Comparing it with the Savior’s example helps children see God’s love and plan for us.

Activity Idea – “Follow the Directions Game”:

  • Hide a small picture of the Savior.

  • Give children step-by-step directions to find it, emphasizing listening and following instructions.

  • Discuss how obeying God’s commandments guides us safely to Him.

Song Idea:

  • Sing “Keep the Commandments” (Children’s Songbook, 146–47).

  • Encourage children to share examples of times they obeyed even when it was hard.

Easy, Creative At-Home Crafts Add-On

  1. Promise Chain: Paper strips showing God’s promises and children’s trusted promises.

  2. Safe Path Maze: Draw a simple path on paper or tape a path on the floor, guiding children past obstacles to a “safe” end.

  3. Obedience Handprint Craft: Children trace their hand and write “I obey God” on each finger, symbolizing doing good in many ways.

  4. Isaac’s Wood Bundle Craft: Using small sticks or paper, children can create a miniature “wood pile” to retell the Abraham and Isaac story.
