Week 2: I Am a Child of God

Week 2: I Am a Child of God

Scriptures: Moses 1:1–4, 6, 12; Abraham 3:22–28
Theme: “I Am a Child of God” — and Heavenly Father has a special work for me to do!

Hi friends!
This week’s Come, Follow Me lesson helps our little ones learn one of the most powerful truths they’ll ever know — they are children of God!

When we help preschoolers feel this truth, not just hear it, it changes how they see themselves and how they treat others. Let’s make this week full of love, learning, and discovery.

1. “I Am a Child of God” Mirror Message

Scripture Focus: Moses 1:4

Give your child a small, safe mirror or a piece of foil to see their reflection.
Say together:

“I am a child of God.”

Then take turns saying:

“You are a child of God.”

Extension ideas:

  • Write the phrase I am a child of God in bubble letters and let your child trace it (fine motor + early reading).

  • Match uppercase and lowercase letters from the phrase — “I” to “i,” “G” to “g.”

  • Ask, “What does it mean to be a child of God?” and write down their sweet answers to read later during family night.

2. “God Made Me” Shape and Color Self-Portrait

Learning tie-in: Shapes, colors, body awareness

Cut out simple shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, oval).
Let your child build a person out of shapes — “God made me!”

As they create, talk about how Heavenly Father made each of us unique.
  Ask:

  • “What color is your hair? Eyes?”

  • “What can your hands do to help others?”

  • “Why are you glad God made you?”

Sing “I Am a Child of God” or “I Will Follow God’s Plan” while creating.

If you need a basic coloring page, you can use this one: Back To School Elementary Self Portrait Template by Printables By Janille  but it is not necessary.

3. “Heavenly Father Has a Work for Me” Puzzle Hunt

Scripture Focus: Moses 1:6, 39

Hide simple “work” cards around the room with pictures of ways children can serve — helping clean up, being kind, saying prayers, sharing, smiling.
When your child finds a card, say:

“Heavenly Father has a work for me!”

Then read one example of Moses’ work from the Old Testament Stories book or show a Gospel Art picture.

Early reading idea: Add beginning sight words to the cards (“help,” “pray,” “share”).

4. “Resist Temptation” Action Game

Scripture Focus: Moses 1:12–26

Preschoolers can practice how to respond to wrong choices in fun, active ways!
Call out pretend situations (“Someone says, ‘Don’t share!’” or “Someone says, ‘Let’s be mean.’”).
Have your child act out what to do:

  • 🧎‍♂️ “Pray!”

  • 🚶‍♀️ “Walk away!”

  • 💬 “Ask for help!”

Talk about how Moses said, “I will not cease to call upon God” — and so can we!

Math tie-in: Count how many times you can “resist” (five good choices = five happy stars on a chart!).

5. “Before I Was Born” Star Sorting

Scripture Focus: Abraham 3:22–28

Talk about how we lived as spirits before coming to earth.
Cut out paper stars (or use star stickers).
Explain:

“Heavenly Father chose each of us to come to earth and learn.”

Hide the stars around the room and let your child find and sort them by color or size — great early math and color practice!

Song of the Week

“I Will Follow God’s Plan” (Children’s Songbook, 164–165)
Invite your child to draw a picture of their “work” — the good things they can do to follow God’s plan.

For older preschoolers and kindergarteners: These activities focus on extra reading and writing practice.

Tracing Sentences:

  1. I am a child of God.

  2. God knows me.

  3. I can make good choices.

  4. I pray every day.

  5. God helps me.

Kindergarten Math Word Problems:

  1. I have 3 stars. I get 2 more. How many stars do I have now?

  2. There are 5 apples on the table. I eat 2. How many apples are left?

  3. I see 4 birds. 3 more come. How many birds are there now?

  4. I have 6 crayons. I give 2 to my friend. How many crayons do I have left?

  5. There are 7 flowers. I pick 3. How many flowers remain?

Closing Thought

Each time your little one says, “I am a child of God,” they’re building a tiny testimony that will grow with them.
Keep repeating it throughout the week — during breakfast, in the car, or before bedtime.
Small moments of faith really do create big adventures.

With love,
Janille
