Week 1: The First Testament of Jesus Christ

Week 1: The First Testament of Jesus Christ

Scriptures: Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; Exodus 16:4, 11–15; John 6:35; Numbers 21:4–10; Jonah 1:4–17
Theme: “I Can Learn About Jesus in the Old Testament”

Hi friends!
This week, we are starting an exciting adventure through the Old Testament. The stories are some of the oldest in the world — and they help us see Jesus Christ even before His birth on earth. Preschoolers can start learning that the Old Testament points to Jesus in simple ways, and we can make it fun, active, and meaningful!

1. “Spot the Savior” Picture Game

Scripture focus: Isaiah 7:14; 9:6

Show your child a picture of the Nativity or Isaiah’s prophecy artwork (like The Prophet Isaiah Foretells Christ’s Birth).
Ask them to point out:

  • Baby Jesus

  • Angels

  • Mary and Joseph

Learning tie-ins:

  • Colors: “Can you point to something that is blue? Gold? Red?”

  • Counting: “How many angels do you see?”

  • Early reading: Write “Jesus” and “angel” on a small card and let them match the word to the picture.

2. “Bread of Life” Snack Counting

Scripture focus: Exodus 16:4, 11–15; John 6:35

Talk about manna as the Bread of Life — something Heavenly Father gave His people to help them survive.
Give your child small pieces of bread or crackers. Count each piece together.
Ask: “Who gives us food every day?”

Learning tie-in: Counting, one-to-one correspondence, gratitude.

3. “Covenant Promise” Sorting Activity

Scripture focus: Exodus 19:5; Mosiah 18:10

Explain that God makes promises — covenants — and we can make promises to Him too.
Give your child a mix of colored paper hearts. On some, write promises we keep (brush teeth, say prayers, be kind). On others, write fun actions (jump, clap, sing). Let them sort the hearts into “Promises to God” vs. “Fun Actions.”

Learning tie-in: Sorting, colors, cause/effect thinking, early reading of simple words.

4. “Names of Jesus” Name Match

Scripture focus: Exodus 6:3

Talk about how Jesus had many names in the Old Testament (Jehovah, Lord, Savior).
Write each name on a card, and give your child a matching picture card (e.g., lamb, star, brass serpent).
Ask them to pair each name with the picture that shows how Jesus helps us.

Learning tie-in: Early reading, matching, connecting symbols to concepts.

5. “Jonah’s Big Adventure” Movement Game

Scripture focus: Jonah 1:4–17; Matthew 12:38–41

Retell Jonah’s story in a very simple way. Let your child pretend to:

  • Walk on “stormy waves” (wiggle across a blanket)

  • Be in a “big fish” (crawl under a chair or blanket)

  • Pray to Heavenly Father (kneel or fold hands)

Learning tie-in: Gross motor skills, sequencing events, remembering story details.

Song of the Week

“Seek the Lord Early” (Children’s Songbook, 108)
Sing it while acting out one or two of the Old Testament stories you read together.

For older preschoolers and kindergarteners: These activities focus on extra reading and writing practice.

Tracing Sentences:

  1. I can follow Jesus.

  2. God loves me.

  3. I read the Bible.

  4. I pray to God.

  5. I love to learn.

Closing Thought

The Old Testament may seem old and full of unfamiliar names, but each story points to Jesus Christ. Even preschoolers can begin to see Him in pictures, symbols, and actions — and start building their own tiny testimonies.

With love,
Janille
